Chandrolsavam (Review)

It is good to hear and see that director Ranjith, the maker of many ‘superhuman’ characters mostly played by Mohanlal, does not go that way this time! He has not given any false promise to Mohanlal fans by choosing a low key title like Chandrolsavam!

Mohanlal’s Sreehari, the hero of the movie, has not played any ‘gimmicks’ but interacts with all in an ordinary way unlike in other Ranjith movie.

One feature of Chandrolsavam is that its story stands for the sake of the story than for any ‘star’ value!

Chandrolsavam says about the incidents happening for a short period in the protagonist’s life. Srihari has come back now to his Chirackel tharavadu for a stopover from Paris! In his own words it is another halt in his life.

He has been absent in his village for six years and in that period he had been jailed for one year and the rest of the time, five years, in Delhi and Paris. For all his pals, his life has become a total mystery!

The first half of the film has focused on the protagonists’ love days with Indu (played by Meena) and his attempt to recapture the lost good old days in his life. His attempt to save Indu and to unravel the machinations behind his jailing and other treacheries made upon his beloveds is told in the second half!

The story maintains the conflict till the last reel. The coming of Durga (played by Khushboo) with some sorry tidings has helped to maintain the story’s tempo till last.

Mohanlal easily transforms into Srihari by his humour coated acting! Meena who dons the role of Indu once again proves that she is an ideal onscreen pair for Mohanlal.

Jagadheesh’s ‘novelist KR’, the caretaker of the thravadu has also some attraction as the character interact more with the ‘audience’ than with other ‘characters’! KR sees what the audience had thought!

Ranjith, Tamil actor, plays the villain role, Ramanunni.

The supporting cast includes maestro Dhakshinamoorthy, Sreeraman, Santhosh, Augestin, Kochin Haneefa, Saikumar, Oduvil, Murali Menon, Manianpilla Raju, Sujatha (Tamil actress), Samvritha and Seenath.

Like songs, stunt scenes, especially one shot on a paddy field in which Mohanlal confronts Bheeman Reghu, have been pictured well by cameraman Azhagappan. Film editor is L.Bhuminathan.

Gireesh Puthnchery-Vidyasagar team has produced some nice songs. The crew includes Suresh Kollam (art direction), Velayudhan Keezhillam (wardrobe), P V Sankar (make-up).

Santhosh Damoder has produced Chandrolsavam under Damer Films banner.
